"How
much sunlight do my plants need?"
Most
orchids do not handle direct afternoon sun well. Both
the heat and UV (ultraviolet) rays are too strong. The
best conditions are morning sunlight or indirect
afternoon sunlight. Usually, a southern or eastern
exposure will provide the light you are looking for. Filtered
sunlight using a screen or tinted window can also work.
There
are exceptions, Vandas can handle direct afternoon sunlight.
Vandas should do well in a West window that gets a
lot of afternoon sun.
Many
customers ask us, "How many hours of sunlight do I
need?". That question is difficult to answer
since we don't know the quality of your light or how much
light your particular orchid might require. With that
disclaimer, we suggest at least 4 or 5 hours of bright light
(not necessarily direct sunlight) to see decent plant growth.
More sunlight should increase the rate of growth.
What
to do if your orchid gets too much or too little sun
There
are a couple of things you can do if your orchid plant is
receiving either too much or too little sun. For too much
sun, try is moving your plant a few inches away from the
sunlight. For too little sun, move your plant into
a sunnier location.
If
this is not enough, you should probably try finding a different
window or locationfor your orchid. We have heard many
happy stories from customers who found success by simply
finding a new, better location to grow their orchid.
